This is one of my slab vessels. I made this by taking a piece of clay and rolling it flat and placing it in a bowl and letting it dry to be this shape.
I smoothed out some of the rough parts so it didn't have random bumps.
The coloring was made by glazing the vessel. The interesting blochiness was created by a salt buff that I put over the top of the mulberry red color.
I glazed the edges orange to give it a pop of color.
This is one of my slab sculptures. I love flowers so I wanted to create a flower out of clay.
I took a big ball of clay and flattened it and cut petal shapes out of it and started putting them together to form a flower.
I smoothed out the petals so they would be soft like silk and look similar to real petals.
I glazed it petal pink, which is a softer, more subtle color. I didn't want the color to over power the detail. The cracking of the glaze was caused by opening the kiln to soon. I like the texture it created on the petals.
This is my other slab sculpture. I had to make another one to receive and A in the class so I created this.
I once again made a ball of clay flat and cut random pieces and put them together.
I experimented with glaze on this project. I didn't know what the brown would look like so I used it. I actually thought it was gonna be blue and green.
I splatter painted it so it would have a randomized pattern.
This is one of three mugs that I built. They are slab vessels. I carved a different song on each.
I love music and I love tea and coffee so I made these to take to college and use.
The notes were hard to carve because I let them dry to fast and I had to work slowly so they wouldn't crumble.
I took the clay, flattened it out and tried to cut similar pieces for sides.
I made coils and used them to support the sides so they would not collapse.
Then I had to build more coils for the other sides that connected each side to one another. I smoothed it our with a paint brush because I couldn't fit my hand inside them.
I built the handles by taking a chunk of clay and flattening the sides so it was cubic. Then I curved it so it would be easier to hold.
I learned that glazing mugs is difficult. My glaze didn't stick to the clay very well.
When I glazed it I took a small brush and glazed the parts that I carved out.
This wasn't an easy task. I had to be very steady handed so I wouldn't mess up.
When I was picking out glazes I tried to find colors that were food and drink safe.
After they were done in the kiln I tested them out and they worked!
